This Valentine's Day I wanted to do something special for EB; but, having very little imagination (and a financially-conscientious wife) I had a hard time deciding what that should be. Should I take her to a nice dinner somewhere? Flowers? Jewelry? Chocolates? None of these sounded good enough, so I decided on a home-made approach. I did some research and found a great meal that was very unique (to us at least), and decided that this was what I would do for her. Was it really that special? Well, some may not think so. According to the Sterns' Encyclopedia of Bad Taste, [it] epitomizes culinary kitsch: "the point ... is to maximize hedonistic extravagance" by ordering the two most expensive things on the menu; that is, the menu is guided not by aesthetic concerns, but for the sake of vulgar display. What is this vulgar display?
Reef and beef.
Surf and turf.
Steak and lobster.
So, I planned out the menu, went shopping, and slaved for 3 hours preparing her gift. We had BBQ lobster tail, sauteed filet mignon in a balsamic pan sauce, bacon cheddar twice-baked potatoes, and finished the meal off with apple crisp. Each part of the meal was made from scratch and "infused with love."
Well, none of it was perfect, but it was all at least recognizeable. Hopefully next time I will be able to improve. Here are some shots:
